Article Title: Iroquois Steeplechase Slated for May 10 at Percy Warner Park
Article:
In its 73rd season, the yearly spectacle of horses, hats and hounds will take place at Percy Warner Park on Saturday, May 10, 2014. A Nashville tradition for more than seven decades, the Iroquois Steeplechase has captivated thousands of spectators from near and far with its traditions, pageantry, and the energy of the sport. Those who have made this day at the races an annual family outing or an opportunity to entertain business associates know that no other event in Middle Tennessee can match the appeal of the Iroquois. The Iroquois Steeplechase’s history has a rich history dating back to the pasture races in Middle Tennessee during the 1930’s. In 1936 the idea that a race course could be built in front of a hillside in Warner Parks in Nashville came to fruition when Mason Houghland, Master of the Hillsboro Hounds, undertook the responsibility of making this vision a reality and volunteered his foxhunter followers to help with the project. Through the friendship of an ardent foxhunter, the Works Progress Administration was directed to build the race course, designed by William Dupont, and to make other improvements to the Park. Since that time, the Iroquois Steeplechase has been one of Nashville’s most revered events to attend whether you’re a horseman or a spectator. Tailgating is also permitted whether you are looking for a space in the popular in-field adjacent to the boxes, along the rail, in the Family Area, or a space to spread out on the lawn with friends, we’ve got it. So, bring a blanket and a picnic to enjoy wonderful hillside viewing right at the finish line! General Admission tickets are still available.
