| Article: | It’s time for the 2016 John A. Merritt Classic as a host of exciting events are scheduled. The weekend-long festivities include the TSU football season opener in addition to other special activities. On Friday, September 4, there will be a golf scramble, pep rally, happy hour and reception as well as a “Back to the Bridge” Mixer with live music, food and fun on the Shelby Street Pedestrian Bridge. On Saturday, September 5, there will be a luau and pool party, patio party and concert at Riverfront park. Sunday, September 6, a tailgate experience will take place before the downtown of the season opener at Nissan Stadium. This exciting weekend of activities is intended to allow Tennessee State University to raise funds for scholarships and other related needs for TSU students. John Merritt Classic The John Merritt Classic (JMC), first played in 1999, continues to honor John A. Merritt, the legendary TSU football coach who led the Tigers from 1963 - 1983.
