Article Title: Food & Funk Festival To Showcase an R&B All Star Lineup at Riverfront Park on August 20
Article: Midwest Entertainment will bring its Food and Funk Festival to Riverfront Park on August 20. The signature event includes a mix of some of the greatest old school performers while also offering a place where vendors can provide some of the best soul food dishes.
This all star R& B lineup includes Jeffery Osborn, Freddie Jackson, Evelyn “Champagne” King, Atlantic Starr, and Stone City.
Jeffrey Osborne is an R&B singer with a shining career which began as drummer in 1970 with Love Men Limited, and has only gone up from there. He became their primary vocalist, and launched his solo career after ten years with L.T.D. This ambitious career move was rewarding almost immediately, and his success only proves his raw talent. He’s released numerous hit singles and has earned five gold and platinum albums to date. To top off his prolific career, Osborne spends time singing the national anthem at various sporting events. He was also the featured artist on a season of The Bachelor: On the Wings of Love, the name of which is the title of one of his top-ranking songs. Despite over 35 years of singing experience, Osborne’s voice is still soul- deep.
Freddie Jackson has taken the funk genre by storm and hasn’t stop releasing hits in his more than 40 years’ experience in the music industry. He’s mastered everything from dance to romance, and has become one of “R&B soul’s most valuable contributors” according to his personal bio. Jackson is a soul singer out of Harlem who spent time with multiple groups before going solo. His first album, released in 1985, spent six weeks at number one. Just Like the First Time made an even bigger splash when it spent 26 weeks at the top of the US R&B Albums chart, one of the longest number one record runs ever. Chart-topping hit singles Have You Ever Loved Somebody, Tasty Love, and Jam Tonight might make an appearance at the Ohio Expo Center this year June. 30 years ago this year Freddie Jackson released his number one R&B charting solo album Just Like the First Time, and he will continue his legacy of excellence at the Food and Funk Fest.
Evelyn “Champagne” King, born in the Bronx, got her start while working with her mother at Philadelphia International Records. Theodore Life heard her powerful vocals while she was working, and she signed a production deal with Life’s Galaxy Productions and a recording contract with RCA soon after he started training her. She released her first album in 1977 which featured “Shame”, her first gold album. The track was one of the first to be inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame. King has released numerous albums since then, including chart topping singles and gold albums. She also collaborated with Miquel Migs on “Everybody”, released with his album Outside the Skyline. King’s music, including hits like “Love Come Down” and “I’m In Love,” to name a few.
Atlantic Starr got its start in Greenburgh, New York in 1976. After name changes, shifting band members, and many album releases, Atlantic Starr grew into the band we know and love. Their sound is inspired by Earth Wind & Fire and Kool & the Gang, and has morphed into a smoother blend of funk, pop, and soul with time.
Atlantic Starr has released one platinum album, two gold albums, and countless chart topping singles during their consistently successful career. They are best known for their hits “Always” and “Secret Lovers” and have released chart topping songs in both R&B and pop genres. We can’t wait to hear them perform live on the river at Food and Funk Nashville.
The Stone City Band, lead by La Morris Payne aka LA SKY, has earned its reputation as one of the most sensational R&B bands out there. Stone City has toured the world for years, challenging bands like Tower of Power and Brass Construction with their horn section’s power packed riffs.
Morris Payne proved his worth while touring and recording with Rick James and Motown Records, and Stone City was born through their partnership. The band is highly influenced by Rick James, and plays many gold and platinum hits such as Urban Rapsody, Bustin’ Out Of Seven, and Street Songs. Seeing Stone City Band live will leave you breathless, don’t miss their remarkable performance at Food and Funk Fest Nashville.
