Article Title: | Celebrate Black Music Month in Music City During the Month of June |
Article: | On June 7, 1979 the month of June was proclaimed as Black Music Month and now under the Obama administration it is also referenced as African American Music Appreciation Month. Before and since then, black entertainers have experienced tremendous success, some unprecedented, in the music industry. Throughout the month of June, you can explore a few exciting events featuring some of Black music’s most accomplished artists both nationally and locally. One of Music City’s signature events is the Jefferson Street Jazz & Blues Festival which will be held June 14 & 15 at the Pedestrian Bridge. Grammy-nominated R&B singer Freddie Jackson will headline the festival along with various Music City talent. Jackson is known for hits such as "Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)", "Jam Tonight", "Nice and Slow," and "You Are My Lady" to name a few. The thirteenth annual celebration of jazz, food, and fun is just one of the exciting events happening in the city. The event is sponsored by the Jefferson Street United Merchants Partnership (JUMP).
