Article Title: John Merritt Classic XV Kicks Off Season Opener On September 1 at LP Field

Article: The John Merritt Classic will be extra special this year with an array of special events to take place over the three day weekend. On Friday, August 30, join the party with live music, food and fun on the Shelby Street Pedestrian Bridge for the "Back to the Bridge" Mixer at 8:00 pm followed by R & B music duo Alexander O’Neal & Cherrelle who will perform live at Jazz & Jokes for a 7:00 pm and 9:30 pm concert. On Saturday, August 31, Tennessee State University will host a pre-game pep rally from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm followed by a JMC Day/Block Party, a classic picnic and pool party and an Inaugural Aristocrat of Bands Alumni Honors Gala. On Sunday, September 1, Tennessee State football will open their 2013 schedule at home with the 15th annual John Merritt Classic on Sunday, Sept. 1 against Bethune-Cookman at LP Field. At the event, Tennessee State will retire the No. 95 football jersey of Pro Football Hall of Famer Richard Dent at the 15th annual event. It will be the first number retired by the program. The only other retired number by TSU is former basketball start Richard “Skull” Barnett’s No. 35. The ceremony will take place during halftime of the game which kicks off at 7 p.m. Dent, 52, a defensive end from Atlanta, in 2011 became the first former Tiger to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
